There is a lot of stigma and judgement surrounding the rehoming of dogs. Especially at the moment with many news reports circulating about the increase of ‘lockdown dogs’ being rehomed as their owners ‘struggle to cope’ as they begin to return to work and normal life begins to resume.
The purpose of this article is not to judge or shame. But to provide information and support if you have found yourself in a position where you are thinking of rehoming your dog.
Giving up your dog a difficult decision. Rescues take in dogs for all sorts of reasons: from changes in accommodation and finances, to relationship breakdowns, illness and family crises. If it’s in the best interest of the dog that you find another home, read on for advice and support.

Please don’t rehome your dogs online. If you have a puppy or a dog that you need to rehome, rather than sell them online it is a better idea to contact a rescue centre where they can have health checks and be expertly matched with a suitable new home.
You might be feeling very desperate. But please don’t be tempted tor abandon your dog. This is dangerous and very traumatic for them. It also means that if they do end up in a rescue centre they won’t know their history which will make it more difficult to find their perfect home.

It might be the case that you need support with certain aspects of dog ownership but you may not need to rehome them. These days there are lots of professionals out there who can assist you with all sorts of aspects. Perhaps some extra support might help you. For example a qualified and reputable behaviourist ot trainer, a professional dog walker, reputable doggy day care and boarding facilities, friends and family.
Reach out to local rescues, trainers, dog care professionals and vets for advice. If your living situation is changing, there may be a friend or family member who could take your dog temporarily. You may be surprised at the help a sincere dog owner will get with they reach out and do everything that they can to keep the dog that they love. We all fall on hard times, let people help you if they can.

Remember that a dog can be a 15 year+ commitment that requires significant planning. You will require time, finances and dedication. You should also research where your new puppy/dog is coming from. Prices for puppies in lockdown rocketed which is fueling the cruel puppy mill trade and dog thefts.
