New UK Law on Dog Theft: What It Means for You and Your Dog

Your pet's safety is always a top priority. Here at Harbour Tails, we are committed to keeping informed about important changes that could affect you and your pet.

One such change is the new law on dog theft that recently came into effect in the UK. If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s definitely something worth paying attention to.

What’s Changed?

Dog theft has unfortunately become a growing concern across the UK in recent years. The emotional trauma coupled with the financial loss, is devastating. Recognising the severity of this issue, the UK government has introduced stricter penalties for those who steal dogs.

As of July 2024, dog theft is now recognised as a specific crime, separate from general theft. This means that the courts will consider the emotional distress and harm caused to both the dog and owner when sentencing offenders. The penalties have been significantly increased, with prison sentences of up to five years for those convicted of stealing a dog.

What Does This Mean for Dog Owners?

While this new law is a positive step, it also serves as a reminder for all of us to remain vigilant. Here are a few steps you can take to ensure your dog’s safety:

1. Microchip Your Dog: Ensure your dog is microchipped and that your contact details are up-to-date. This makes it much easier to be reunited with your pet if the worst happens.

2. Use GPS Trackers : As many of you know, I use "Tractive" GPS devices for all off-lead dogs during our walks. These trackers provide an extra layer of security and ensure we are reunited with your dog more quickly in the unlikely event of loss.

3. Be Cautious with Social Media: Be mindful of being specific about your location.

4. Secure Your Property: Make sure your garden and home are secure, with gates and fences that are difficult to breach.

5. Stay Aware During Walks: Be aware of your surroundings when out and about with your dog. Avoid leaving them tied up outside shops, even for a short time.

6. Discreet Transport At Harbour Tails, I use a plain van without branding. This decision is intentional, aimed at providing more discretion and reducing the risk of drawing unwanted attention to the fact that there are dogs on board. Your pet’s safety and security are at the forefront of every decision I make.

This new legislation is a welcome move in protecting our beloved pets from the rising threat of theft. Together, by staying informed and taking a few simple precautions, we can help keep them safe.

Thank you for trusting me with your dogs. I’m always here to support you and your pet in any way I can.

Best wishes,

Dani & Cali
