Spring has sprung, fun has begun!

Spring is a wonderful time of year for dog walking. Its starting to warm up (but still a comfortable temperture for the dogs), the sun shines a bit more, the days are longer and the prospect of summer is nearer.

Harbour Tails has put together a few “Spring Tips” to help you and your dog stay safe and healthy so you can enjoy the beautiful Spring season to its fullest.

Pesky Parasites

With warmer weather, those dreaded parasites come out to play! Including, fleas, ticks and lung worm. So make sure your dog stays up to date with their flea and worm treatment. Ask your vet for advice about this to make sure you have effective and appropiate treatments for your dog. For more info about parasites click here.

Dogs can get hayfever too!

Just like humans, some dogs can suffer with hayfever caused by dust and pollens. It can cause similar effects to humans such as runny eyes, nose and itchy skin. If you notice any symptoms like this in your dog, speak to your vet. Your vet will be able to help with things such as antihystamines.

If you suspect your pet has an allergy or is having a reacton to an insect bite, please visit your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Let Your Garden Grow With Care

Be careful using and storing fertilizers and incecticdes as they may be harmful to your pet. Also be aware that many popular springtime plants—including rhododendron, daffoldils and tulips—are toxic to dogs and other pets. For more information about toxic plants click here.

Buckle Up!

While most dogs love to feel the wind on their furry faces, it is best not to let them stick their head out of the window. Flying debris and insects can cause ear or eye injuries and lung infections. Pets in vehhicles should be secured in a crate or wearing a seatbelt harness.

Out and About

Warmer weather might mean you take your dog further afield and on longer walks. Make sure your dogs microchip is up to date and they wear an ID tag while out and about. For more general dog owner/walker safety tips click here.

Dog Walking Locations around Poole during Spring/Summer

We are very lucky to have an abundnce of beautiful beaches and Heathland walks surrounding Poole. However from 1st March - 31st July dogs should remian on lead on the heathlands, nature reserves. Dogs are aslo restricted to certain ‘dog friendly’ beaches.

If your dog enjoys offlead walks, I have come up with a list of places (mostly concetrating on being local to Poole area) where you can do so year round. Click here for info.
(Harbour Tails Dog Walking does not recommend walking your dog off lead unless recall is regularly practiced with success and the dog is friendly towards other people and animals).
