Toxic Palm Oil on Beaches
As dog walkers and beach users, it is important to know that sometimes palm oil washes up onto our beaches, and although it is safe for human consumption and is used in many human food products, palm oil is toxic to dogs and can make them very poorly.
As of writing on 18/12/2020, there have been reports of palm oil at Hengestbury Head beach, and Weymouth Beach. Please be aware though when dog walking at any beach, as palm oil washing up is not an uncommon occurance.
What does the palm oil look like?
Keep an eye out for palm oil while dog walking on beaches. It can be present as grey/white waxy pebble or rock size clumps. Or lots of smaller pea sized pieces.
What are the symptoms of a dog who may have consumed palm oil?
Vomiting
Diarrhorea
Dehydration
If the dog has eaten a large amount of palm oils it could lead to kidney damage, liver failure and/or gut blockage. Sadly, it can result in the dog needing to be out down as they are unable to make a recovery.
What should you do?
If you suspect your dog has been in contact with palm oil, contact your vet as soon as possible.
